The expectation for vegetables in your garden to appear perfect is a thing of the past.
Have you noticed gardening has become quite a ‘trendy’ topic in 2023? People are becoming more aware of the benefits of growing their own food.
A Shift To Indoor Gardening Is Happening For Many, Including Millennial’s.
Millennials are one of the fastest growing age groups that are learning about gardening but why? Millennials want to know where their food comes from and how it’s grown.
With the rise of urban living and the lack of space, indoor gardening has become increasingly popular. People want fresh produce at their fingertips no matter where they live.
In 2023, we can expect to see more people growing vegetables in small containers indoors or even on windowsills. This trend is not only practical but by adding plants to any indoor space adds character, a pop of colour and improves the air quality in your home.
Sometimes it’s nice to ‘see’ someone while they are explaining things. If this is you, check out the link to my YouTube video below!
Could Victory Gardens Be Making A Come Back?
Have you ever heard of a victory garden? Victory gardens became popular during World War II as a way for people to grow their own food. As the cost of food continues to rise could victory gardens be making a comeback in 2023? The answer is ‘yes’!
What is the best food to grow in a victory garden?
My biggest piece of advice is to grow vegetables that your family actually likes to eat. Traditional victory gardens had foods that were high in nutritional value, such as beans, beets, cabbage, carrots, and kale. Other vegetables you could add to your modern day victory garden could be potatoes, squash, tomatoes, corn, garlic and different herbs. It really just depends on the amount of space you have for your garden.
Victory gardens are a way for people to take control of their food supply. These types of gardens can be found in backyards, community gardens, and even on rooftops. If you don’t have a lot of space at home, do a little digging and see what options are available in your local area.
More and more people are realizing the health benefits of growing their own food. Victory gardens can provide fresh, healthy produce that is free of harmful chemicals and pesticides. It’s a win-win for both people and the planet.
A Focus On Organic Gardening Is The Future
Another shift we are seeing in vegetable gardening is an increased focus on organic gardening. People are becoming more aware of the harmful effects of pesticides and chemical fertilizers. Chemicals are not only impacting our environment but our health too. The expectation for vegetables to appear perfect when harvested from your garden is a thing of the past.
In 2023, we can expect to see more people using natural methods of pest control and using compost to improve the soil in their gardens. This trend will help people to grow healthy and safe food without the high price tag.
How Do Gardens Promote Biodiversity?
In 2023, we will see more people planting a variety of vegetables, herbs, and flowers in their gardens. This not only adds color to the garden but also helps to create a more balanced ecosystem.
Planting flowers in the same garden as your vegetables helps to attract pollinator insects which can improve the overall health of your garden. The other benefit of creating a bio-diverse garden is it attracts birds, insects and different wildlife to help keep pests under control. My chickens would like to think they help with the overall health of my garden but I DON’T totally agree!
Trends For Urban Gardeners
For urban gardeners, have a look at the space you have available on your property. Vegetables don’t have to be grown in a traditional garden. Container gardening has exploded over the past few years. The nice thing about planting vegetables in containers is you can move the containers to maximum sun and shade depending on what is growing in your containers.
Don’t forget to make good use of existing flower beds to grow vegetables as well. Once you decide what you would like to grow, do your research to see what type of flowers can be planted with your vegetables. This is called companion planting. For example, roses are a companion plant for garlic. Just remember, not everything is compatible with one another.
Did you forget to pull all your old plants last fall from your garden? Make sure you check my blog post ‘Essential Steps To Prepare Your Garden For Planting’. In this article I discuss traditional gardens, no dig gardens or no till gardens, manure and so much more.
