Is that a thing?
Learning to grow your own vegetables can be very satisfying. Learning to grow vegetables in containers just seems a little less overwhelming compared to some GIANT garden like your grandparents used to have! Am I right?
Does it take work? Yes!
Does it take time? Yes!
Can you have failures? Yes!
Over the past couple of years the gardening world has exploded! COVID has been so challenging for so many families but for many they have been given the gift of time. People were accustom to busy schedules. Constantly running from activity to activity, place to place.
Growing vegetables would not have even crossed the minds of so many. What a gift to teach yourself and your children to learn to grow their own food. I have many memories of gardening with my grandparents. I’m sure they were not always happy with the type of assistance I often provided when I was little but they were always thrilled to have me help!
Container gardening is a great option for people that would like to try gardening. Growing food in containers allows you to control the amount of sun and water your vegetables receive. If you are lucky enough to have an automatic sprinkler in your yard, you don’t even have to worry about watering your containers. Score!!! Container gardening is also popular for people with limited space. For instance if you only have a small patio or balcony area.
What type of vegetables does your family actually like to eat?
When considering what types of vegetables you should grow, consider what you and your family enjoy eating. We love beans so we grow a TON of beans. I then freeze them so we have our own beans to enjoy all winter long. (Oh, I don’t blanch them or anything!! Once bean season comes around I will share my tips and tricks about freezing beans. Trust me, I freeze beans the easy way!)
The most important thing to remember when planting vegetables in containers is not to overcrowd your plants. It seems kind of silly to have one tiny little plant in a BIG pot but your plant will thank you when it has enough space to grow!

Container gardening is a great option if you want to give gardening a try. Think of how amazing it would be to have fresh tomatoes or even beans right on your porch. Even better, it saves you a trip to the grocery store!
