Have you been making spaghetti with plain sauce from a jar or can?  Wait until you try this recipe.  This spaghetti sauce recipe will elevate that plain old sauce simply by adding a few fresh ingredients.

Spaghetti is one of those staple menu items that is easy to make and inexpensive. Plus, it’s a great meal to have on hand for those busy weeknights when you need dinner in a hurry.   If you’re learning to cook this recipe will be a perfect addition to your ‘go to recipes’.

How do I make spaghetti sauce?

The sky’s the limit when it comes to making spaghetti sauce.  I like to make things simple.  You can make spaghetti sauce by using diced tomatoes and tomato sauce but I typically ‘cheat’ and just use a jar of grocery store pasta sauce as the base.  Any brand of pasta sauce will work just fine.

Visuals are often helpful when cooking. Check out this YouTube short to see exactly how I make this spaghetti sauce.

Ingredients

  • 1-1.5 pounds lean ground beef
  • 1 medium sized onion diced
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 2 celery stalks diced
  • 1 pepper diced (any colour)
  • black pepper to taste
  • 1 jar/can of pasta sauce (any brand will work)
  • 1 can sliced mushrooms (drained)
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • ½ teaspoon oregano
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar (optional)

Instructions

  1. Add lean ground beef, onions, garlic, celery, pepper, and black pepper to a frying pan.  Cook over medium-high heat until the beef has browned and the vegetables are tender.
  2. Once the beef is cooked add this mixture to a large stock pot.  Add remaining ingredients to the pot and simmer on low-medium heat  for 30 minutes.  Be certain to stir the sauce occasionally.
  3. While your sauce is cooking, cook your spaghetti noodles as per directions on packaging.

**TIP:  If your sauce is too thick, simply add some pasta water to your sauce.  Works like a charm!

Can you freeze spaghetti sauce?

I have been making this spaghetti meat sauce recipe for years.  I often make individual portions with the leftover pasta and sauce and freeze them.  These individual portions are great to have on hand for those nights that you don’t have time to make dinner.

If you are in College or University, doing a little meal prep will save you time and money with some meals ready to go in your freezer.

How long will spaghetti sauce last in the refrigerator?

I’m always cautious when it comes to food storage.  I only keep spaghetti sauce in the refrigerator for 2 days.  I freeze any leftovers after 2 days.  Plus, who wants to eat the same meal 3 days in a row anyway?

What can you serve with spaghetti?

Something that goes hand in hand with spaghetti is Caesar Salad.  Make sure you check out my  ‘Easy Homemade Caesar Salad Recipe’.  You will never buy Caesar Salad Dressing again once you see how quick you can whip this dressing up yourself.  Cooking isn’t hard, you just need the right recipe!
