So do you call it Berry Crisp or Berry Crumble?
The big difference between ‘crisp’ and ‘crumble’ is the topping. Crisp is typically made with oatmeal and crumble is not. You can add nuts to either one because baking is all about trial and error. The end result is creating something delicious to enjoy.
Berry Crisp is an easy dessert you can whip up in no time at all. Have you ever had guests stop by for dinner and needed something to serve for dessert? This will be your new ‘go to’ recipe.
Can you use frozen berries to make Berry Crisp?
Honestly, I only use frozen berries to make this crisp. I always have frozen berries on hand. That’s what makes this recipe so great. There’s not a lot of fuss. Just pour the frozen fruit into the casserole dish. No slicing required.
What ingredients are used to make Berry Crisp topping?
You can get creative when making topping for crisps but I like to keep mine simple. For this recipe I stick to plain old fashioned ingredients. I use oatmeal, flour, butter and cinnamon. Nothing too fancy.
I use this same topping for many other crisps. If you want to make a lovely fall dessert and use up some apples, check out my recipe for ‘Apple Crisp’. Apple crisp is an old time favourite of many. Did you know Apple Crisp became popular during the Great Depression?
Ingredients for the filling
- Frozen fruit (I use a combination of frozen strawberries, frozen blueberries and frozen raspberries)
- 1 can of pie filling (I use cherry or raspberry)
- 2 tablespoons all purpose flour
Ingredients for the topping
- 1/4 cup melted butter (plant based butter can be substituted)
- 1/4 brown sugar
- 3/4 cups oatmeal
- 1/4 cup all purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
- To make the filling: Grease the bottom and sides of a 8×8 casserole dish with butter. Add an equal amount of frozen strawberries, frozen blueberries and frozen raspberries (or any of your favourite frozen fruit) until the dish is 3/4 full.
- Next pour the frozen fruit into a separate dish and sprinkle the fruit with 2 tablespoons of all purpose flour. Mix until combined and pour the fruit mixture back into your 8×8 dish. Add either a can of cherry or raspberry pie filling to your frozen fruit and mix until combined. Set aside.
- To make the topping: In a separate bowl add melted butter, brown sugar, oatmeal, flour and cinnamon. Mix until combined. Once combined, gently spread this oatmeal mixture on top of the fruit mixture.
- Bake at 350 degrees F for 35-40 minutes or until the top appears golden brown and the fruit mixture begins to bubble along the edges.
We love this with either some vanilla ice cream or whipped cream on top!

Can you reheat Berry Crisp?
If you have any leftovers you can certainly reheat this Berry Crisp in the microwave or oven. It tastes just as delicious the next day. For that matter you could make it the day before and be so organized for when your company arrives if you are serving this for dessert. You could just throw it in the oven while you are enjoying dinner to reheat it. No one will ever know.
Does Berry Crisp need to be refrigerated?
When I make any type of fruit crisp I always refrigerate any leftover crisp. This will keep in the refrigerator for 3-4 days but I’m sure it won’t last that long.
